At extreme pixel peeping, the Tamron is a touch soft wide open, but is crispy as h-e-double hockey sticks stopped down to 3.2.
Being a touch soft wide-open is not a deal breaker as almost every fixed zoom and prime lens has a sweet spot a stop or two down from it's maximum aperture.
Also, 5-stop-effective Vibration Compensation helps to minimize the appearance of camera shake for sharper handheld shooting in difficult lighting conditions.

I took a chance and bough the Tamron after not being so incredibly impressed with what I saw. I'm just an amateur photographer-serious one, though. I was really torn between this and the Nikkor 24-70 VR - not alone I know. Academically I guess the edge would go to the Nikkor, but two factors tipped the scales for me, size and price.Separate VC modes are also available to suit various styles of shooting: Mode 1 is a balanced setting for general use, and promotes both a stabilized viewfinder image and stabilized results, while Mode 2 is designed exclusively for panning movements. But this Tamron is the sharpest lens I've ever owned. I mean BIG differences for, from what I can tell, marginal gains in IQ and build quality.
